The latest version of Windows Live Messenger gives you the ability to record a short 4 second video clip to use as your display picture.
As long as you have a webcam installed on your computer its as easy as clicking the “Dynamic Picture” button and hitting record. Once your 4 seconds is up, it will save and give you a preview of your new picture. Its really amazing stuff!
When you download a file, you usually have to wait a while for Firefox to finish scanning the file. If you want to turn this off:
1). Open Firefox and in the address bar type about:config
2). Click the button “I’ll be careful, I promise” to proceed:
3). Once this is done, you should see a big list of different settings Firefox is internally using. Scroll down until you find the setting browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone…
4). Set this value to False and restart Firefox.
Now whenever you download any files through Firefox, when it completes it won’t scan your file saving you precious time!
Credit: Thanks to Nirmal’s post “How to Disable Automatic File Scanning after File Download in Firefox 3” for this one. This was very useful for me so I figured I’d share it with you guys!
Google sites is a free web hosting and site creation service that started in late 2008 and provides anyone the ability to create all kinds of different websites without any HTML or web programming background whatsoever.
You can create team project sites, company intranets, picture gallery sites and file (music, photos, video, etc) sharing sites with little effort at all.
Some key features:
Single-click page creation
No HTML required
Customisable look and feel
Settings for accessing and sharing information
Plus its one of the only free web hosting services out there that I’ve seen that gives you a huge storage space (~10GB).
So, after logging in with my Gmail email account I was able to create a brand new website in under 5 minutes. If you want to add a new page to the site (and you will if you want something other than a homepage) you just click “Add page” link, give it a name and tell it where it will be placed (top level with your homepage or underneath as a sub link) and your done.
You can customize what kind of content you want on that page (calendars, word, excel documents, a blog, file browser, photo gallery, video player, the list goes on. You can upload a company or site logo to be used on the site as well as customize what the site looks like.
Also, you can create a very user content driven website with Google Sites if you like. People can visit your site and add their own content, make comments on other people’s additions and even Google talk integration for chat and IM functionality!
If you’ve an individual, family or business who ever thought of starting their own website but don’t know how to get started, Google sites would be the best place to start. For more information visit the Google sites homepage or take a look at the service’s blog.
