Windows Live Messenger – Webcam Display Pictures

The latest version of Windows Live Messenger gives you the ability to record a short 4 second video clip to use as your display picture.

msn_webcampic

As long as you have a webcam installed on your computer its as easy as clicking the “Dynamic Picture” button and hitting record. Once your 4 seconds is up, it will save and give you a preview of your new picture. Its really amazing stuff!

  1. Hi, do you know if there is a special folder where the webcam pictures are stored? Like temporary data or something.

  2. that is a great question, one I’ve been trying to find an answer to myself. It would be great to be able to re-use those pics/webcam animations for other things. If you would like to send me your email address I’ll be happy to let you know where they are stored once I find it!

  3. Yes well, I’ve subscribed to this thread of comments, so you can write here, if you find anything.
You know, i’ve tried to look for the folder in Program files, but i think there is no such thing as a picture storage folder. Kind of lost hope – i guess they haven’t ‘invented’ it yet.
I was even thinking of writing a letter to wlm support center 🙂

  4. I m searching for those too ! I’ve found the dynamic pictures as well as backgrounds ,,,,winks,,,,etc under : user/appdata/local/messenger/”email”/

However the regular pictures are not there !

I wonder where they are hidden !?

  5. They are saved in your user/appdata/local/messenger/”email”/objectstore/webcamDDP folder but they are saved as ID2 files.. not sure what to use to convert those to gif.

  6. Thanks, RandomGUY! But… strange – I don’ have a webcamDDP folder there. Doesn anybody else have this folder?

  7. DT2 can be display pictures, webcam pictures can be found in /objecstore and are not named nor any preview given. So the best way to identify the pictures u took is to arrange them according to the modified date. Just in case it’ll mess up my messenger, i copied them into a different folder to convert them.

You can Change the file type. For example: file.DT2 -Change it to -> File.png

Another option is to open it with an image viewing program. That’ll do the magic 🙂

    Just my 20cents. Suggestions. Cheers!

  8. Just an amendment, refering to the above changing the file type. I did it by changing the file name 🙂

  9. The good path its the

    C:\Documents and Settings\’user’\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\’Email’\ObjectStore\UserTitle\

Here rename all the ‘dt2’ files to ‘png’, and find your pictures 😉

  10. Yes, the path is the same. I also have Vista. The only thing different is that you have make the hidden folders visible.
On Vista it’s easy — you go the Start menu search and just type Folder options there. Click on Folder options. Then on the View tab. Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

  11. Okay I’ve found the files fine enough, been able to change them, but is there anyway you can keep them as the 4-second clip instead of just a picture?
    Thanks :]

  12. hey. my webcam has filter effects, would anyone know how do i can get that happening for windows live dynamic pictures?

  13. ave tried everything here and still cant find pics taken with my microsoft webcam

    can anyone help

  14. Hello everyone! Your info guided me to the right place.
You will find the pictures inside this folder: C:\Users\”USERNAME”\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\”EMAIL”\ObjectStore\UserTile\
Then just copy and paste them somewhere and change the extension to JPG, for instance.
Not sure about the videos tho.
    Cheers!

  15. i am using windows xp.
    how do i use:

    “C:\Documents and Settings\’user’\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\’Email’\ObjectStore\UserTitle\”

to find my pictures. i dont understand ?

  16. aye bro. cheers for the good info. but how do i convert the DT2 file to png? When i rename it, it still wont open with any image program. Help please >.<!!

  17. dont worry about it, i finally did it. you have to enable yourself to view file extensions and yeah. thanks guys!!

  19. hi, please help me with this??

ive just taken such a great pic on my webcam and i want to save it.. but i dont know where it is!

tried all suggestions posted on here but i must have different files to others

    please help!

    xxx

  20. i still cant find the files…
i have vista and when i try to search for any of the locations listed it says that they dont exist im so computer illiterate though so its probably my fault…but im pretty sure i did it right…

  21. Still cannot find anything.I’ve done almost everything in order to find them.
    Some explain more?
    I have Vista,too.

  22. Thanx a lot guys! I’ve search them for a while now! I finally found them, even if they are in 96×96, which is really small!

  23. For Windows Vista Do the following….

Go to my computer, open the Organise tab located at the top left of the screen, click on Folder And Search Options. Click the view tab and find the option to change hidden folders so you can see them.

Then go into the C drive, Users, Then your username, Appdata, Local, Microsoft, Messenger, Then Your Email Address, ObjectStore, Usertile.

This is where your pictures are stored.. Now you cannot see a preview so search by the date you took the photo…

Open the files with Windows Photo Gallery…

The pictures are small, you cannot do anything about that. You will have to copy and paste the files somewhere else to edit them as you will effect Messenger…

I hope this works for you….

  24. I actually found the folder… thank u so much…
finally i can save those pics… for other uses… =]

  25. Can somebody please tell me more specifically where to find these webcam pictures? I didn’t know how to “customize” those addresses.. like can you tell me in more traditional way? From My Computer -> (C:) -> then where? “Program Files” or WINDOWS? i can’t find even if I go under “Program Files” -> “Windows Life” I can’t find any of those folder that people are talking about! PLEASE HELP!

  26. is there any way to keep it as animated .gif? the .png works and .gif works. but what i want is the 4-seconds animated .gif instead of the static .gif

    has anyone figured it out?

  27. Hey all,
I tried all of the methods listed above to no avail..
    But then *BRAINWAVE*
    Try going to ‘My Computer’
Then right at the bottom under ‘Scanners and Cameras’ click ‘USB Video Device’.
It won’t have any of your previously taken pictures, but you can take pictures and store them to your computer which is almost as good (:

  28. Guys,

If you can’t find the folder…
1.Go to SEARCH and check “All files and folders”
    2.put your msn ID

and then it won’t find anything. because it’s hidden.
    3. click “change weather hidden and systems files are included”

    4. click “expanded – includes all files and folders”

    5. serach….

then you will see your email address folder

    Click into it.

    go to Object store

    and then User tile

These are your display pictures. Look in Details and organise them by dates so you can guess when they’ve been made……….

Change the .d2t to .jpg then you will see them.

    good luck 😉

  29. hi thanks… this was very useful
    i found the pics
but i was wondering how i can change the size of the pics
so i can make it larger

  30. I have three files for each picture in my folder, one is png (but it has reduced (square) margins, so it doesn’t work for me), one is dt2 and one id2. as the last is only 1kb I assume I can’t do anything with it. now I tried to copy the dt2 file to another folder and change the extension to png, jpg, gif… but none of them are readable by any programs. I want to open them with photoshop (cs2 version). and I have vista. anyone who managed to actually see the whole image by changing the file name?

  31. actually… since the file is so darn small anyway, why do we want to do all this procedure and not just do a print-screen? simple as nothing… 😉

  32. jess cunliffe :hi, please help me with this??
ive just taken such a great pic on my webcam and i want to save it.. but i dont know where it is!

  33. umm i went to %appdata%\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\passportid\UserTile and found files under it but none are dt2..its all sqm :S

  34. I Need Help With This Too;;I Really Need To Find My Msn WebCam Pictures
Ive Been Looking For Quiet a While Now
    Help…

  35. HEY! thought this was a great thread and well here is sort of an update for Windows 7 😀
web pics are stored in \ObjectStore as .DT2 files, (!!NOT the .ID2 ones!!!)
just need to change the .DT2 files to .png or another image file extention.

    e.g: Z3k+0LTd3m+Y1tw1G6U6QdfEJr8=.DT2
    would become:
    Z3k+0LTd3m+Y1tw1G6U6QdfEJr8=.png

    C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\(your email)\ObjectStore\

above (bracketed) would be your information so your username and your email,

    Good luck, 😀

  36. I found the answer! after looking for a very long time i found them here:

    C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\EmailAddressName\ObjectStore\
    UserTile

in this folder there are files with funny names and they are DT2 or ID2 files. you have to open these with a picture program like paint or photo gallery. only open the dt2 files in these programs because those are you pictures. (btw it wont work with picture manager)

Have fun…Hope this helped x :)…only for vista

  37. you can do it the same as vista you just ogtta type \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\EmailAddressName\ObjectStore\
UserTile as appdata is hidden so you have to do it that way 🙂

  38. Flick :For Windows Vista Do the following….

    You r a master brother

  39. ok here we go..
if someone was looking for a pic have been taken by a webcam using windows live messenger plus+ here’s there way how you can find it or how to receive it but the little problem is that’s the pic isn’t that big it’s smal as the same quality that’s the pic have been taken with..

So if you want to find it you have to use this way:

    1st-Open any conversation with anyone…

2nd-Put the picture that you have taken it with your WebCam..

3rd-Then click on the little logo beside your picture in the chat box (it’s called your options)..

4th-Click on (View my contact card)

5th-you will find that’s your contact card just opened so now click on:(Additional Options)

    6th-Click now on (Contact informations…)

7th-You will find here your contact information, with the picture that’s you have choosen it and beside of that there’s the save icon named (Save this image..) so just click on it and choose the place where you want to save your picture that’s you have taken it by your WebCam…

But as i said before the pic isn’t that big but in the same quality where you taken it.. =]

have fun and feel free to take lots of pictures and how to get them back

    Many thanks, Magno.

  40. Isn;t it just the way. I wish they would just simplify thangs lols. You would think if u take pix they would save to docs I guess not. The other issue i have is i can run cam in yahoo but not windows live. i have to adjust calling or mics also i mean at the back of tower.. lord and im not that naive can n e 1 help?

  41. hey okay its located in
    C:\Documents and settings/your user name/LOCAL SETTINGS/application data/microsoft/MSN Messenger/UserTile

then there r your pictures and their a dt2 file, which you can open with paint (:

  42. This is not working for me……. I have a sony lap top and i have vista I can get to the AppData but then instead of saying Local It sais Local low…. I click on that and it sais Conduit and DvdVideoSoft! Please help me!!!

  43. thank you so much,

but the photos r so small when u open it with paint and when u save , it jus got a bad resolution. any solutions for that?

  44. hi.i have had the same problem but where do you find users on your computer?
please reply back! i serouisly need the photos !

  45. I also had this problem, trying to find the photos I took with my webcam using WLM. Let me break it down as simple as I can to help you FIND THE FOLDERS, FIND THE PHOTOS, CONVERT THEM TO JPG (or any other photo format), CHANGE THE RESOLUTION and make them look “good enough” after you enlarge them (assuming that you want to make them larger, since they’re really small).

HERE ARE MY STEPS THAT I USED TO DO ALL OF THE ABOVE:
WINDOWS 7 USERS FOR WINDOWS LIVE MESSENGER 2010/2011

    STEPS:

    1. Open “Computer” / “My Computer”
    2. At the top left hand corner of the folder, look for “Tools”
    3. In the “Tools” drop down menu, scroll to the bottom and look for “Folder Options” then click it.
    4. You should see (3) “Folder Options”..General, View & Search
    5. Click “View”
    6. In “View” you should see “Advanced Settings” with a list of options to tick or untick, DO NOT untick anything.
    7. Under “Hidden files and folders” tick “Show hidden files, folders and drives” and then click OK
    8. Now you should see all hidden folders in pale, look for the “Users” folder and open it
    9. There should be 3 folders in “Users” open the folder that shows your user name, eg: JohnDoe
    10. Then open “AppData”
    11. In “AppData” open “Local”
    12. In “Local” open “Microsoft”
    13. In “Microsoft” open “Messenger”
    14. In “Messenger” open your email folder, eg.. johndoe@live.com
    15. In your email folder open “ObjectStore”
    16. In “ObjectStore” open “UserTile”
There you should see ALL photos you took with your webcam using WLM and some other photos, etc etc.

They are usually the larger files in KB, but I advise you to open them with “Paint”.

    TO BE CONTINUED….

  46. CONTINUING…Now that you’ve found the folders and photos…
PART 2…OPENING & CONVERTING THE PHOTOS

    STEPS:

    1. Right click one of the photos in the folder (some of you may be asking, “how do I know which one is my photo?”…As I said at the end in my first post “They are usually the larger files in KB…”

    2. Scroll down to properties after you right click

    3. After you open properties, you should see a “General” tab, in there…

    4. Look for and click “change”

    5. In change, you should see a list of programs, eg.. Internet Explorer, etc etc…

    6. Look for and click “Paint” then click OK

    7. Now, you’re able to double click the files in the folders and they will be opened with “Paint” because they are a DT2 file and I’m only aware of “Paint” being the only program they can open with, thats why I suggest using “Paint” as the default program, like the other users on this site. 😉

    8. After you do that, try finding the photo you want to convert to JPG and to also enlarge.

    9. In this step I have to suggest downloading a software, don’t worry…ITS’ 100% FREE!…The software is called FORMAT FACTORY, I use it almost everyday to convert my audio files to MP3 and my photos to JPG and whatever format I want to convert them in. This software can also convert videos in almost, if not every format you can think of, the same goes for photos, audio files and DVD, yes..DVD…and again, it is 100% FREE, no surverys, no questions, no serials, no Ads, nothing…oh…and its LEGAL!!!!!!… Download FormatFactory here… http://www.formatoz.com/index.html

    10. Click the download link to the right for the latest version and then follow instructions, its not hard to download or install. Simple, step by step instructions.

    TO BE CONTINUED…

  47. okayy, i’ve got it 🙂
go to the search box ; then “all files and folders”
and i merely typed in the search box ; (my email address)
    [eg: blahblah@hotmail.com]
and you will go to “objectstore”
then go to “usertile” and you will get to this place with many corrupted files.
for the files that says “.dt2” at the back,
just rename them with a “.png” behind
    and you’re good to go.:D

  48. They will likely be where the rest of your display pictures are stored:

    %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\\ObjectStore\UserTile

The images in there are stored as .dt2 files which you will need to copy to the desktop or some other directory and rename to .png.

    It work 100% 🙂

  49. hey found a simpler way after
    C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\EmailAddressName\ObjectStore\
UserTile just change the property of the DT2 FILES by right clicking selecting properties and change it to windows live photo gallery voila all those DT 2 files will open up in the windows live picture gallery where u can save them to a folder of your choice
    happy to help -:)

  50. ok so got the pic but its too small to post of facebook, needs to be at least 180 pixels , so how do i make it bigger?

  51. For Windows 7
But,don’t forget to write your winuser name and your msn mail
    C:\Users\Winuser name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\YOUR MAIL\ObjectStore\UserTile

  52. Hi, for windows 7 do you need to change the folders view options in control panel. Uncheck hide and select view all.
    Eva

  53. Hi, for windows 7 do you need to change the folders view options in control panel. Uncheck hide and select view all.
    Eva

  54. I FINALLY got the image I wanted saved to my computer from Windows Live Messenger after lots of trial and error, but now I can’t use it for my facebook profile because its too small! I tried Photoshop and it won’t let me make my picture larger. Any suggestions?

  55. if you changed the format to .png, use fireworks to open the picture, the save as a different format so that photoshop can use it…
